about

Circa late 2021, Thief had just wrapped on its sessions. Thief, as you may know, is my depressing album.' But for some reason, I felt like there was something still in me. Not like "there was still stuff left in my tank," that's what the deluxe was for. It was something... different. Maybe it was inspired by the copious amount of times I listened to "Charcoal Baby" by Blood Orange that January, or the amount of Euphoria + POSE I watched, but this weird neon club-scape started to enter my mind. It wouldn't come out. So it came out in the music. Written on an acoustic guitar, recorded on a free trial of Ableton, then RE-RECORDED on a less expensive license of Ableton, this new 18-track batch of music was born. But it wasn't an album. That much was clear. It felt more like a bridge point between Thief and whatever is to come in the future, yet also a companion piece to the dark grevs of Thief. So. I did what any modern artist does when they don't want to commit to an "album" yet and I just called it a mixtape.

So... I submitted it... maybe like a year and a half ago. Obviously, time passes and I'm sitting at home, wondering: "I wonder if it still sounds good now?" Spoiler: it didn't. Maybe it was the fact that my microphone got pummeled by an on-moving car, but good lord did those original recordings sound like shit. It was like you gave a 13 year old a mic and yelled at him to make 18 songs on GarageBand, which is ironic since that's kind of how this whole thing started. But maybe eight months ago, I sat down and re-recorded most of those tracks. Some held up enough to where it was just minor things, but some of these songs were just completely unfinished, with shit lyrics, and shit instrumentals, and god knows what else. Maybe one day I'll feel a little silly and release these as demos... emphasis on demos. But this re-recorded version is the one that's releasing. There's been some changes along the way - a change in title, album cover, arrangement, but I can safely say that after many months of tinkering (about six to be exact) that Blood Strawberry, my new mixtape, will finally be yours December 1st.
